Ext2?: 1998, does not use journaling, maximum file size 2Tb, maximum filesystem 32Tb
Ext3?: 2001, uses journaling external link, same maxes as Ext2?
Ext4?: 2008, bigger version of Ext2?, maximum file size 16Tb, maximum filesystem 1Eb = 1024*1024 Tb; can turn journaling off

Journaling slows things down, but is safer during crash.  Ext2? or non-journaling Ext4? after a crash needs to be checked with fsck.

For a huge USB drive used for backup (and potentially very large files), I would choose:
sudo mkfs.ext4 -O ^has_journal /dev/sdb1

Perhaps for a small USB, ext2 is good enough.
