LaTeX recognizes periods '.', question marks '?', and exclamation marks '!' as sentence enders and puts extra space after them for visually appealing output.  (Do that MS Word!)

Periods after capital letters, like C., are not treated as full stops, but periods after lower case letters are.

To make LaTeX treat a period after a lower case letter as a non-full stop, use do not end here.\

To make LaTeX treat a period after a upper case letter as a full stop, use I take ESL\@.

Apparently, periods, question marks, and exclamation points inside quotes are still recognized as sentence-ending.
