0Problem

When attempting to backup remotely via a script like

#!/bin/bash
BACKUP_HOST=cirilo.zool.iastate.edu
BACKUP_FILE=/usr/home2/kdorman/kdorman_laptop.tar.bz2
SSH_BIN=/usr/bin/ssh
BACKUP_WHAT=$HOME
EXCLUDE_WHAT=--exclude=Desktop

tar c --rmt-command=/sbin/rmt --dereference --bzip2 --ignore-failed-read --preserve-permissions --rsh-command=$SSH_BIN --directory $BACKUP_WHAT $EXCLUDE_WHAT -f $BACKUP_HOST:$BACKUP_FILE*

errors such as

bash: /usr/libexec/rmt: No such file or directory
tar: cirilo.zool.iastate.edu\:/usr/home2/kdorman/kdorman_laptop.tar.bz2: Cannot open: Input/output error
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

appear.

0Solution
The tar package attempts to use '/usr/libexec/rmt' as the remote tape
program, rather than '/etc/rmt' which is more normal (and which is said
to be the default in the manual page).

Workaround:

There is a simple workaround, just add '--rmt-command=/etc/rmt'

Or check where the rmt command is found on the remote server and set appropriately!
